Im a Metalhead, so i suppose Rock comes closest.
The older rap is alright, like the older Eminem, older Dre, etc. The stuff where the lyrics rhyme properly, doesnt use a swear word every 5 seconds, the lyrics actualy mean something, and the background music doesnt sound like a 3 year old trying to use a telephone.
The new stuff however, *puke*, "Yo, im gangsta, Yo, im a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing pimp, yo, look at my hoes, yo, RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO, yo...."
If you want some examples of crap, try "Im On A Boat" or "Like A Boss", or that song that uses only the 3 words "Yeh, What and OK".
I heard a song on the radio, it sounded like the guy hadn't passed basic english, and had no idea how to rhyme words. While he was saying random words separted by "RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO", "S***", "B****" and "N****" he must have been strangling cats while trying to use his cellphone in the recording studio.

Depending on the situation, sometimes rock doesn't do it for me. I'd say rap.

Rock (preferably Metal) would be my choice.
I Never quite developed a taste for rap. It feels too much like cheating: no "real" instruments and talking instead of singing. Yeah,- I know I'm old!
Different people - different taste. Guess that's why we have so many kinds of music.

It really depends on what you mean by "rap." Most fans of the genre would tell you that what is out there today is complete garbage, and it is. I do not understand how anyone could listen to some odd character going on and on about his shoes. To say the least, it is quite odd. Like every genre, there is the good and the bad. If a song is good, and I am willing to lend my time and an ear, then I shall do so. Ultimately, I would have to take rock over rap.

It doesn't have instruments, it's not music.
Usually people grow out of (c)rap when they are 15-16 years old. I'm not saying that I don't listen to rap, but rock is the overwhelming majority of my playlist, both on the MP3 and my PC.
Even emo music is (a bit, but still) better than rap and techno.

Since I can go on you tube and find a 3 year old white girl rapping or a 70 year old british women with no teeth rapping there is no contest.

I am reminded of the line in The Incredibles about when everyone has super powers then noone will be super. Everyone and anyone can rap the only thing that popular rappers have are the images/gimmicks/persona they portray which allows them to rise above everyone.
Everyone cannot play rock (not guitar hero/rockband related) i.e. write/arrange music/play instruments (solo or as a band)/sing, so it still retains that special power called talent that enables it to soundly defeat rap. You can also put classical/jazz/blues as categories that would also soundly defeat rap, hell even country beats rap.

...Really? If you think that 3 year old can 'rap', you clearly have no idea what rap is.
Here's what I want you to do. Stop listening to mainstream, listen to some underground rappers who can actually rap. Then I want you to come up with lyrics as good as they can, and rap. Then I want you to come up with a freestyle on the spot. Post it on here. I mean, if everyone and anyone can rap, there should be no problem, right?
Here's a random freestyle by Immortal Technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUBxB0mZj6M
Far from a great freestyle. I want to see you freestyle as good as him, since you think anyone can.
Until then, your ignorance makes me laugh.

Rap used to be good. Rock used to be original. Now we have Lil' Wayne and Nickleback.

Are you guys telling me there isn't crapola in Rock? The rappers you named is like me naming Fall Out Boy and Blink 182 and saying "See how bad Rock sucks?" Listen to some of the better stuff. Go far back to Boogie Down Productions with KRS One(so good Sublime made an ode to him), Dr Dre, S N double-O P D-O-Double-G, Beastie Boys, Eminem, Ice Cube, Q-Tip, The Wu Tang Clan, The Ghetto Boyz, Tupac Shakur, B.I.G., Missy Miss-dameanor, Mos Def, Queen Latifa, DMX, Naz...and many others.
I like all styles(I am that guy who likes both Miles Davis and Jay Z). Anything that takes some skill and artistry to make, I'm into. To those who say it takes no talent or skill, or isn't "music"...as I said before, try...TRY..telling me Fall Out Boy is music that took skill, with a straight face. People were saying Rock wasn't music and took no talent to make. Interesting that both styles grew out of Black culture....hmmm...

What musical talent and or instrument doesn't involve skill?

How do you create music without a musical instrument?

I'm on a boat, and Like a Boss are both joke rap songs, The title track of the same album even say they're Fake MC's. The songs are there to be funny instead of "good" rap songs.
Either way, to answer the question, I prefer rock in various forms.
